Old Coach House

Residential
In the shelter of a mature suburban plot, a neglected coach house has been carefully stripped back to its shall — and rebuilt as a calm, contemporary home for modern family life.

The design began with a simple brief: maximise light. Every window was considered not just as an opening but as an instrument — tuned to invite daylight in from multiple aspects and depths. Natural light, not square footage, became the measure of spatial generosity.

At its heart, a new open-plan volume stretches out beneath a flat, green roof. Anchored by a triple-glazed 2.5m roof light, this space gathers light from above and draws the landscape in through full-width glazed doors. The site has now been reorganised into a visually striking yet coherent and functional plan.
Thermal performance drove the upgrade of the fabric. Insulated render, hardwood timber cladding, a standing seam metal roof and underfloor heating together deliver high levels of comfort and signifi cant energy reduction. Daylighting strategy has further reduced reliance on artifi cial light — even at dusk, this house seldom reaches for the switch.

Inside, material choices are deliberate: a hardwood stair is compact, visually quiet. Vaulted ceilings in the bedrooms increase perceived space and enhance vertical light. A contemporary kitchen links side rooms and living spaces, preserving fl ow and family connection. The study sits quietly to one side, washed in daylight.
