Sir Harry’s Road

Residential
In the Edgbaston conservation area, a Georgian villa quietly welcomes a contemporary single-storey pavilion unfurling at its rear. This modern extension is deliberately low-slung and modest in scale, ensuring it never dominates the dignifi ed 19th-century façade. Instead of imitating the Georgian style, the design embraces a contrasting yet sympathetic architecture – a clearly modern addition that highlights the original building’s character through restraint and legibility.
Before
The extension was conceived to modernise the home’s modest kitchen and unlock a generous open-plan living space for contemporary family life. To preserve the integrity of the original structure, the new addition is subtly set away – not physically detached, but architecturally distinct – stepping into the garden to engage with landscape and light. This careful siting allows the existing fabric to breathe, respecting its massing and rhythm while allowing new space to evolve in dialogue.
The original house has been sensitively refurbished using traditional methods, preserving its historic materiality while improving comfort and performance. The new structure, by contrast, is refi ned and quiet: glass walls, a planted roof, and a palette of natural materials allow the addition to dissolve gently into its setting. Together, old and new form a home that is both grounded in its heritage and responsive to how we live today.
